Rabbit And Exotic Pet Care
Dogs and cats are not our only patients at Tennessee Avenue Animal Hospital. Our commitment to the pets of Cincinnati and surrounding communities extends to other species, too. To best accommodate a diverse pet population, we offer the same exceptional level of care to rabbits and various exotic pets, including reptiles.
Less common pets need just as much lifelong treatment as dogs and cats. Our veterinarians are knowledgeable in caring for a variety of companion animals and can answer any questions you have about your rabbit or exotic pet's health.
Ferret Care
Ferrets should be examined as pets from the time of purchase every 3 weeks until at least 16 weeks old. They should be checked for intestinal parasites yearly and dewormed appropriately. All ferrets, unless they are intended to be breeding animals, should be spayed or neutered. We recommend vaccinations against distemper and rabies annually. We also recommend that all ferrets stay on heartworm prevention monthly because they are very susceptible to heartworm disease. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes. A microchip can be placed easily by injection and provides permanent identification if they should ever get lost.
Exams And Additional Services
Exotic pets need yearly exams so we can evaluate their health and recommend necessary treatments. Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets and reptiles can hide their illnesses effectively, so routine visits can help us prevent the progression of these illnesses. In addition to physical exams, we can also perform various diagnostics including blood work and fecal tests. We recommend fecals for every patient regardless of species. Reptiles and most exotics and pocket pets don't need to be vaccinated, but ferrets can receive vaccinations for rabies and distemper if needed.
Whether you are new to owning exotic pets and reptiles or have cared for them for years, we can guide you in giving your companion the healthiest and longest life possible. Whatever concerns you have, we'll do our best to address them.
